The Interesting Things One Learns At Work

I have just discovered that we have a book written in the 1600s that discusses the various ways to utilize water in treatment for various ailments. In fact, (shocker), the author believes that drinking water constantly might be healthier than drinking beer!

Beer was the safe alternative to water in the 1600s. Water was dangerous stuff, and they didn’t understand germ theory. Fermentation plus alcohol sterilized the water that went into the beer, making beer one of the few safe beverages available. If I were magically transported back to the 1600s, I might have to overcome my aversion to alcohol and drink nothing but!
